Music Review: Childish Gambino - CAMP

Donald Glover is more well-known for his character Troy Barnes on the NBC show "Community" but he just released his first commercial album under the alter-ego Childish Gambino (he released a couple mix tapes previously). I had a chance to listen to the album on NPR and I'd say it's a great overall mix of hip hop, rock, and electronic music. That being said though, there are some bad songs (i.e. Outside, You See Me) where the hook is better than the rapping. His music reminds of Kid Cudi's beats with Lupe Fiasco's firey lyrics. The overall theme throughout the album is identity and acceptance - you learn of Gambino's struggles as a nerdy, black kid in a white school. Who knew there was such passion behind those black rimmed glasses and preppy wardrobe!

Here are some tracks worth noting:

1. Heartbeats - Arguably the most commercial song on the album. This doesn't take away from the fact that it's a great song with a fun beat and contrasts the grittier tracks.

2. Fire Fly - Reminds me of a Kanye West produced song. And if you know me at all...I love Kanye. This and "Heartbeats" are my favorite songs on CAMP.

3. Bonfire - The first single off the album. It's not my favorite track but it does display Gambino's  lyrical talent. It's reminiscent of Lil Wayne.

4. L.E.S. - Gambino's flow is great in this track (even though it's not so great in others). I love the beat and chorus.

5. Kids (Keep Up) - A slower track that showcases Gambimo's softer side (kinda) as he talks about deception (and his fetish for Asian women).

This is a great start to Childish Gambino's career but there is definitely room for improvement. I won't be surprised if he becomes a big star in the rap world.

What are your thoughts on CAMP or Childish Gambino in general?
