I'll be the first to say that I am not a Coldplay fan and probably mocked Coldplay fans in the past. But after listening to "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" and "Paradise" and being pleasantly surprised at how different they were from Coldplay's earlier stuff, I decided to give the rest of Mylo Xyloto a shot. This album shows a lot of growth and appreciation for new sounds (and less mopey, emo lyrics). Coldplay appears to be tapping into their earlier, orchestral melodies (from hits like "Clocks' and "The Scientist") and pushing those sounds further by incorporating Euro-house synths beats.
Martin's voice is also in top shape to the point where in some songs his lyrics feel interwoven into the background music to create an easy listening experience. I would even go as far to say that this album could convert people to become fans.
Here are some tracks worth listening to beside their two singles:
1. Hurts Like Heaven - It's reminiscent of an 80's synth-pop track and pretty catchy.
2. Princess of China - Coldplay never collaborates so this could have been a risky move when they recorded this song with Rihanna. However, I think her voice and Martin's are a perfect combination and the song could be a hit if released as a single.
3. Charlie Brown - This song is more like the Coldplay track that you would have heard on their previous albums.
4. Major Minus - A rock-oriented, faster track that still incorporates the melodic lyrics and beats of the other songs on the album.
What are you thoughts on the album?
