Life Magazine's pictures of the year

You can view the entire 100-picture gallery here. I pulled out some of my favorites below.

The fierce tornadoes that swept through Alabama in the last days of April killed more than 200 people in the state and destroyed hundreds of homes. In the small town of Pleasant Grove, near Birmingham, two people survived by taking shelter in the closet pictured above; the rest of their house was destroyed.

A massive "supermoon" -- a full moon that coincides with its closest approach to Earth -- silhouettes Lilliputian revelers beside St. Michael's Tower on England's Glastonbury Tor on March 21.

President Barack Obama shakes the prosthetic hand of U.S. Army Sgt. Leroy Arthur Petry of Santa Fe, N.M., who received the Medal of Honor on July 12. Petry lost his right hand during a 2008 firefight in Afghanistan as he tossed aside a live grenade, saving the lives of his fellow Army Rangers.

Sled dogs give it their all during an 11-day mushing race through the French Alps in January.

As New York City -- and, indeed, the entire nation -- marked the 10th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, the glorious but ephemeral "Tribute in Light" memorial lit up the night sky.

Backdropped by a night time view of the Earth and the starry sky, the Space Shuttle Endeavour is photographed docked at the International Space Station on May 28. The STS-134 astronauts left the station the next day on May 29, after delivering the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer and performing four spacewalks during Endeavour's final mission.

Aboard a mid-July military transport flight out of Kunar province, Afghanistan, Staff Sgt. Rulberto Qjendismiranda, 20, of Seaside, California, gazes at a photo of his 11-month-old son, Marziano, on his mobile phone.

U.S. President Barack Obama puts on his game face while playing table tennis with British Prime Minister David Cameron in London on May 24. Obama and the First Lady were in the U.K. for a much-covered three-day state visit.

President Barack Obama (center), First Lady Michelle Obama, and daughters Sasha and Malia tour the grounds of Rio de Janeiro's famous Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil's Tijuca Forest National Park.

On July 24, the first day that gay couples were allowed to legally marry in New York state, John Feinblatt (R) and Jonathan Mintz (L) celebrate their marriage with their daughters. The longtime partners work at City Hall for Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who officiated the wedding.
