The Black Keys have a refreshing sound that brings listeners back to the glory days of rock music before emo and pop-punk took over the airwaves. The American duo's sole instruments are a guitar, drums, and occasional organ. But don't assume that these guys are a rip-off of The White Stripes; the two sound nothing alike.
El Camino is the band's seventh album after their tremendously popular album, Brothers, which won them three Grammys in 2010. The band teamed up again with producer Danger Mouse - you may remember him as the guy who wasn't Cee Lo Green in the band Gnarls Barkley - after a successful collaboration on their 2008 album Attack & Release. Overall, I would suggest this band for anyone who likes blues-rock music and sick guitar riffs.
Keeping up with the trend of digital music releases, the band leaked five songs off the album including their first single "Lonely Boy." I posted the music video for "Lonely Boy" back in October; it's worth a watch if only to witness the sweet dance moves.
I'm a new fan of The Black Keys but I'm eager to hear more after listening to El Camino in its entirety. I already have Brothers downloaded and I'm excited to hear what rocketed this band to the mainstream.
Here are some noteworthy songs off the album:
1. Dead And Gone: This song keeps getting stuck in my head. The music and the harmonies are amazing.
2. Gold on The Ceiling: The guitar is incredible in this song. Not to mention the overall production of the song is fantastic (kudos Danger Mouse).
3. Little Black Submarines: A song that is heartfelt and soulful at the beginning and then progresses into a fast-paced guitar showcase reminiscent of Led Zeppelin.
4. Run Right Back: The lyrics are about a person you can't seem to keep away from ("She's the worst thing I've been addicted to"). The chorus is catchy and the beat is infectious. A song that I think should be the next single on the album.
5. Sister: Reminds me of The Rolling Stones with a mix of funk, rock, and the higher pitched singing.
