Review: Tortilla Cafe

Pupusa platter
A couple months ago, I was watching "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" when I saw a D.C. Mexican and Salvadorian joint called Tortilla Cafe in Eastern Market. Before I talk about the restaurant, I just want to say that if you haven't been to Eastern Market before (like I hadn't before this) then I would definitely recommend it. It's has that brick, quiet vibe of the side streets of Georgetown but without the hoards of tourists crowding the narrow sidewalks. It's a really beautiful area to explore and wander.

I'm not the biggest fan of Mexican food to be completely honest. I like chips and salsa, burritos, and (of course) margaritas but it's never my first choice when I'm thinking of what I want to eat. But for some reason, after watching the chef prepare all the delicious meals on TV, I knew I had to check out this place for myself! It is right off of the metro too so I went last Thursday after work.

Tamale platter
Tortilla Cafe isn't about the atmosphere or decor. The inside kind of resembles a pizza place where you order your food behind a counter and grab your own fountain drink. They really stand out because the food is fantastic and the price is incredibly reasonable. I ordered the pupusa platter with a side of plantains and yellow rice. All entrees come with your choice of two sides. Pupusa is basically a thick (non-sweet) pancake that is stuffed with cheese and pork and served with a side of slaw that you dip it in. My boyfriend ordered the pork tamale platter which I took a bite of and immediately regretted not getting myself. Both meals were delicious and cost about $7 each. Next time I really want to try their empanadas. They also had signs advertising their lunch specials so it's definitely an option for folks who live or work near the orange/blue line.

This is a fantastic place if you like this kind of cuisine (or even if you're indifferent like me). Their outdoor seating area is perfect for people watching. You can't beat the price and the ingredients are fresh and not too heavy.
