SeaWorld does the Harlem Shake

Now that just about every human being on the Internet has done the Harlem Shake, it’s time for animals to get into the action.

Employees at SeaWorld in San Antonio, Tex., have created their own version of the viral video, starring the tourist attraction’s sea lions and a walrus.

The SeaWorld video has already been viewed about 2.5 million times on Youtube. However, it still remains well short of the original clips, which have run up close to 13 million views since being posted earlier this month.

The dance, set to a funky 2012 track by the New York DJ Baauer, reportedly originates from 1980s Harlem, according to the New York Times. (Although not according to actual residents of Harlem.)

Many thousands of copycat Harlem Shakes have since been uploaded to the internet, including performances by supermodels, puppies and even the Norwegian Army — the latter clocking in with a whopping 20 million views.

  1. Hey Debbie,

I am a consultant for SeaWorld Parks, and I stumbled into this post covering the video and wanted to say thank you. Posts like these go a long way towards getting people in the park and spreading education and smiles around our animals. It means a lot - and I am super glad you liked our version of the shake - I'm biased, but I'd say it's one of the best I've seen. :)

I think part of the reason we have significantly less views is it look a while to get in on the action in regards to the meme - but I think the end result was worth it!

Anyways, I am reaching out today to see if you would consider linking to SeaWorld on the page. We greatly appreciate the coverage and mention of the video but every little link can go a long way towards helping both your readers and potential park goers learn more about what we do and increase visibility around SeaWorld so more people can learn, smile and have fun! The San Antonio link is here: http://seaworldparks.com/seaworld-sanantonio/

I know that's a lot to ask and I greatly appreciate it if you would consider it - what you've done already is super appreciated and if nothing else, consider this e-mail a thanks!

Hope you have a great week. :)

    Cheers,
    Ross @ SeaWorld Parks
