Restaurant Review: JoJo

Earlier this month, in an attempt to try new restaurants in the neighborhood, we checked reviews on OpenTable (they haven't steered me wrong yet!) and decided upon JoJo on U Street. The restaurant description seems pretty neat: "hip 1920's vibe with a contemporary flair" and the menu looked delicious with plenty of options ranging from burgers, to salads, to seafood.

Even though we arrived at the normal dinner time (6:30-7) the place was pretty empty except for one guy at the bar and two friends at another table. This might make some people wonder if the place is any good, but we tried to think of it as a chance to get great, attentive service. And we sure did. The waitress was friendly, knowledgable about the menu, and always checked in on us. We later found out that the music that night started at 8pm so it's possible that most people were coming for dinner on the later side (there is nightly entertainment at this restaurant).

We started off our meal with the caprese dish which is a grilled eggplant, green peppers, mozzarella, and tomatoes drizzled with a basil infused extra-virgin olive oil. I really, really like this appetizer because of the great combination of flavors and the tasty EVOO dressing. There was also plenty of food for two people to split without feeling ripped off.

I ended up getting the seafood fettuccine with the lemon butter sauce and my boyfriend got the steak au poivre. The pasta and seafood (mussels, clams, shrimp, and squid) tasted very fresh and not fishy. Also, the sauce was to-die-for; it had such nice flavor and consistency without being too overwhelming. I had a bite of the steak and it was marinaded so well and cooked to perfection. Since the restaurant was still pretty empty at this point, our food was done pretty quickly and we were out the door in no time. I can't wait to come back and try out the other menu items that I was debating. I really want to try the lobster ravioli since this place does pasta so well. Plus, they do their steaks and burgers in so many different ways, it's hard to choose! I think this is a great place for a casual date or a night out with friends. The vibe here is laid-back and no frills but with dishes you would find at a fancier restaurant. Check out their menu here.

Address: 1518 U Street NW Washington DC 20009
